Here are 5 helpful tips to start the School Year
1. Get involved!
Review school menus with your kids, motivate them to try new foods, and get them excited about mealtime. Encourage them to express what foods they may like and don’t like, and why. This will help them develop a better understanding of how certain foods make them feel, which can lead to a healthy relationship with food and a better understanding of your children.
2. Parents try our school lunch for yourself!
Take a moment to drop by during lunchtime and observe the daily operations. It’s a wonderful way to acquaint yourself with the school mealtimes. When children witness adults or parents participating in school cafeteria lunches, they might feel encouraged to join in. Research suggests that sharing lunch with your children can contribute to their healthy mental development and reduce the risk of childhood depression, eating disorders, and other mental health issues.
3. Get to know your school nutrition manager!
In every school, there is a dedicated individual who takes care of all things related to food. It’s wonderful to build a connection with the people who nourish your children. Most of these managers know your kids by name, including their food preferences, and are always happy to receive suggestions about the meals served ways to improve.
4. Be a role model by eating healthier yourself.
The most influential teacher your kids will ever have is you. They are constantly observing everything you do, even when you’re not paying attention. If you want to raise children who have a healthy relationship with food, it begins with your own actions. Therefore, make sure you eat fruits and vegetables, and your kids will follow suit.
5. Discuss what a Healthy meal consist of
The MyPlate is a helpful visual guide developed by the USDA to illustrate what a balanced meal should consist of. It allows children to apply what they have learned at school and home to their daily lives. ChefAdvantage ensures that we include all the main food groups in your child’s meals every day.
